Online Buyers Beware of Sneaky Added Fees

My experiences with Wildfork’s Pickup Shipping Charge and Vuori’s fake first-time-customer discount

You must be on your guard whenever you shop in the USA, particularly from a store with a local and online presence. Overcharging the American consumer has become business as usual and part of the business model. Sometimes, it’s just outright overcharging; other times, it’s furtive tips or shipping charges.

Call me old-fashioned, but if I order online for pickup, I do not think I should be charged a tip or shipping fee. If I have to spend the time and gas money to pick up my items, it’s a store purchase. If your store wants to charge me a convenience fee for shopping online for pickup instead of wandering around the store for items, then you should charge an online convenience fee and call it that so I know what I’m paying for.

Why am I tipping for an employee to put together an order when I come to your store or restaurant and purchase carryout? You can’t pay your employees at least enough for that. Are grocery stores and department stores going to start expecting customers to tip the checkers?
